Electrical Muscle Stimulation or EMS for short:
The main benefits of EMS are:
The main benefits of EMS are:
- Relaxation of muscle spasms.
- Increased local blood circulation.
- Maintenance of/or an increase in range of motion.
Ultrasound: When you mention ultrasound, most people think of fetus images. The ultrasound to see inside the body is “Diagnostic Ultrasound”. The type we use here, at West Pine Medical and Florissant Medical, is “Therapeutic Ultrasound”. This modality has been used by medical doctors since the 1940s. Ultrasound is used to provide deep heating to soft tissues in the body. Deep heating tendons, muscles, or ligaments increases circulation to those tissues, which furthermore assists in the healing process. Increasing tissue temperature with ultrasound also aids in decreasing pain.
Ultrasound introduces energy into the body. This energy causes microscopic gas bubbles around your tissues to expand and contract rapidly, a process called cavitation. The expansion and contraction of these bubbles help speed cellular processes and improve the healing of injured tissue.

Diathermy: This is a deep heat that is traditionally used to address muscular injuries that are located 2 to 4 cm below a person’s subcutaneous tissue layer. The diathermy is a form of shortwave, electro-magnetic therapy that passes the softer tissues and provides heat to denser tissues. Diathermy is used to increase elasticity of damaged soft tissues, relax the muscles and connective tissues, decrease muscle spasms, and accelerate the healing process by increasing circulation. It also has a sedative soothing effect on the nerve endings. When receiving treatment from the diathermy it will typically have a warm sensation.
Benefits:
Benefits:
- Speed up the healing process.
- Increase circulation.
- Increases range of motion
- Relaxes muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Massage: This is a general term for pressing, rubbing, and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, muscle tension, and soft tissue strains and injuries.
Benefits:
Benefits:
- Alleviate low-back pain.
- Improve range of motion.
- Increase joint flexibility.
- Promote tissue regeneration.
- Reduce spasms.
- Release endorphins into the body.
Intersegmental traction table or roller table: This table helps in gently re-establishing the normal ranges of the body's spine. The intersegmental traction table helps in relaxing the muscles and reducing muscle spasms. Using the Intersegmental traction table promotes recovery and assists in healing back injuries.
Spinal discs receive nutrients from the fluid circulation upon spinal joint movements. Joint misalignment in the spine hinders this action from occurring and causes thinning and degeneration of the discs. Intersegmental traction table works by creating passive motion that causes mild stretching of the spinal joints and improves mobility. Intersegmental traction table functions by mobilizing the spinal column while at the same time gently stretching the muscles and ligaments. When the postural muscles of the spine or the muscles, which help in keeping an individual in a straight position, are disturbed or affected badly due to injury, fatigue, or accident, it can cause spasms.
The intersegmental traction table gently elongates the postural muscles of the spine in a comfortable and uniform manner so that the normal joint movement, mobility, and circulation are restored. The patient lies supine (face up) on the table which has rollers beneath the surface. These rollers slowly move up and down the length of the spine.
The intersegmental traction table helps in re-establishing the normal range of motion of the spine in a very gentle and effective manner. It also aids in reducing muscle spasms thus providing relaxation to the muscles.

Paraffin Therapy
Paraffin therapy uses heated wax on your injury to help increase blood flow, relax muscles and decrease stiffness in joints. While known for it's cosmetic functions, it's function at West Pine and Florissant Medical differ. We use it to help relieve pain and decrease stiffness.
